Stephens’ kangaroo rats, on the U.S. list of endangered species since 1988, live by themselves most of the time in plots of California grassland that they defend from nearby members of their species. When conservationists moved animals to safer homes away from development, familiar rivals relocated together fared better than kangaroo rats grouped with strangers, says conservation biologist Debra Shier of the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research.
I read an article about how a man who worked as a taxi drive in England, donated his body for research. The man only did this because he had cancer and he knew that he was going to die soon. When he saw the add in a newspaper asking if anyone would donate their body so that scientists and doctors could mummify it, he thought that it sounded interesting. So he agreed. The way that they mummified it was that they removed all of his organs. After that they wanted to dry out all of the moisture in his body so they put him in a bathtub full of salt. To make sure that the body was not damaged from the salt, they put various oils on his body. They did this for a month. After that process was complete, the scientist got the ingredients that the Egyptians used to mummify their leaders and wrapped him up in the finished product.
I thought that this article was kind of cool. I have never herd of mummifying someone’s body besides the ancient Egyptians. I also never knew that besides wrapping the body up, you also had to take out the organs and the moisture of the body. I also thought that it was kind of weird. I probably would not donate my body to be mummified. I also thought that it was weird that there was an add in the newspaper for it. Adding on, I thought that it was brave for him to volunteer himself, even though he has passed away.
I chose this article because it sounded interesting to me. I did not know that people were interested in the research of mummifying. I also did not know that they even mummified people these days. Another reason I chose this article was because I never knew what the process of mummifying was, and I thought that it would be kind of cool to learn about it. Lastly, I chose this article because it is something different.
In conclusion, I learned that mummifying isn’t just wrapping up a person in gauze. I now know that mummifying mean taking all organs and moisture out of the body, and mixing ingredients together to make the wrap. I also learned that this was not the first attempt at mummifying a person after the ancient Egyptians. The first attempt was in 1994. Lastly, I also learned that after taking out all of the moisture and organs in the body, the skin begins to feel leathery.
Critical thinking questions:
1. Why do you think that someone would want to study mummifying?
2. Would you donate yourself to be mummified after you died?
The article I read was on how talking on cell phones can cause tumors. Over the past couple of years as cell phone users grew so did the number of people that have tumors. Scientist think that it has something to do with the wireless server that is delivering a energy wave straight to your cell phone and all around the world. Holding a cell phone up to your ear causes the waves to travel across your brain by which could cause some problem because of the electro magnetic field that is produce by the device that runs the SMS signal off of your phone and into the air that mixes in with all the other frequency waves and causes one big wave that travels to satelites and cell phone towers world wide and then they can cause a distuption in the human brain wave frequency that can cause tumors and is also extreamly common in all cell phone users.
Critical thinking:
How are brain frequencies affected by cell phone frequencies?
The article I read was about coffee and how it can affect your brain. It gives the caffeine makes your brain cells stronger and more affective. However it is not just one to average person will drink. Caffeine affects the part of the brain that controls learning and memory. This study was done in rodents not humans. Much more research will need to be done to see how it could affect humans.
I chose this article because I am starting to drink coffee and I am very interested in the fact that it can sharpen my brain. It is cool to think about how each cup a coffee I have is one step closer to a stronger and better functioning brain. Also my dad has coffee all of the time and I was curious as to what it is doing for him and his brain cells. I am very anxious to report back to him what I read. I really enjoyed this article and found it very informative.
Critical thinking question- How much coffee do you need to consume before it starts to help your brain cells?
Scientists discovered what could be methane gas in the Mars atmosphere. Methane is involved with many things we see in everyday life. It is mostly responsible for he plants wee see everyday. Methane helps in the growing of plants. Methane also is used in energy plants though out the country to help provide energy for the homes of many people. It is considered to be a very green source of energy and is easy to get a hold of. Methane is also used to heat our backyard grills. If it does turn out that there is Methane on Mars then that could help prove that there was once life on Mars and could still be lived on. Scientists belive that Mars could have been lived on before Earth. They think this because since Mars is smaller then Earth it cooled faster and there for it became livable faster. And if it does turn out there is Methane gas on Mars then their theories could be true.
This is a wonderful break though in science. If scientists can prove their is Methane on Mars then maybe there could have been life before us on Earth. This could change the whole way we look at the universe now. Knowing there is some other race of human beings could prove that we can live in space if we learn to adapt.
I choose this artical because I really want to find out if there is a possibility for life out side of earth to really exsit. People have doubted it for many years and know there may finally be proof that there really is life on other planets.
The information I learned from this artical is that Methane has a lot of uses in real life and that life really could have exsisted on Mars at some point in the history of the universe.
